NEW PHILIPS’ EP COCKPIT LAB IMPROVES EFFICIENCY AT
ST MARY’S HOSPITAL PADDINGTON

St. Mary’s Hospital, Paddington recently replaced its old Cath Lab with a Philips’ state-of-the-art ‘EP cockpit’ installation.  The new concept is designed to support clinicians and staff in the treatment of cardiac rhythm disorders, including complex ablation therapies.

Philips developed its integrated EP solution to address the shortcomings of the present EP intervention lab set-up, and to provide EP specialists with a comfortable and more efficient working environment.  The concept combines Philips’ Allura Xper interventional lab with a number of innovative tools, providing a convenient and intuitive working environment that includes the integration of data management across the whole EP care cycle.

Dr. Prapa Kanagaratnam, Consultant Cardiologist at St. Mary’s Hospital says, “The Philips EP cockpit brings together the technological advances in EP in a versatile and user-friendly way.  The ability to integrate robotic technology is a further avenue of innovation which should prove very exciting.”

The Lab itself is used for one hundred percent EP work and is doing ground-breaking work pioneering the world’s first robotic arm to treat heart rhythm disorder by catheter ablation.  The Sensei Robotic Catheter system, by Hansen Medical, was launched in May with St. Mary’s announced as the World’s first centre for training and development.  The robot allows accuracy and control of catheter movement that cannot currently be achieved without a skill level that usually takes considerable time to acquire. With other surgical robotic programmes already established at the hospital, St. Mary’s is a world leader in robotic medicine.

Also included in the new Lab is EP Navigator, Philips’ innovative imaging tool to support clinicians in the treatment of complex cardiac rhythm disorders.  EP Navigator combines pre-interventional 3D CT images of a patient’s cardiac anatomy with live X-ray fluoroscopy catheter ‘position-information’ in a single image.  This allows easier navigation during complex procedures.  In addition to using EP Navigator for atrial fibrillation, St. Mary’s also uses is for 3D reconstruction of the coronary veins.

St. Mary’s runs one of the UK’s busiest cardiac centres and has a rich history of research, development and teaching.  This heritage is thriving today through the relationship with internationally renowned university partner, Imperial College, London.
